DOMINIC DENIS

Dominic Denis studied at both Chelsea School of Art and Goldsmiths College of Art, first attaining a bachelor’s degree in fine art, then becoming a founding member of the original YBA (Young British Artist) movement. Denis exhibited alongside the YBAs in the seminal show ‘Freeze’ 1988 before continuing in Damien Hirst’s renowned curated shows Modern Medicine and Gambler, exhibitions which framed the future of British contemporary art.

Other notable achievements include his contribution the mesmerising work ‘Untitled 1992’, held within the Tate Modern archives and a commission by Charles Booth-Clibborn of Paragon Press to create a work in print form for the portfolio ‘London’. Each artist had full artistic freedom, linked only by their age, Goldsmiths College and base in London. The 11 commissioned included many notorious names such as Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn, Rachel Whiteread and, of course, Dominic Denis.

After stepping away from the Art World for 30 years, Denis returned with a sellout solo show ‘The House of Dominic Denis’ at Select Gallery in 2023. With his electric colour palettes and intentional use of negative space, Denis’ paintings evoke a sense of ‘sonder’. A profound reminder of the vibrancy of life, captured in a glimpse through a window.

Further works by Denis can also be found at the British Art Council and The Courtauld Institute London. As well as within the private collections of Doris Saatchi, Gilbert Du Button, Gordon Burn & Damien Hirst.
