RICHARD GOWER

Gower studied at Batley College of Art in the 1980s, where he specialised in fine art and sculpture. Over the years he has been developing a unique style with his ‘Reflections’ series, in which observation and chance is key to his practice. This “voyeuristic approach” allows him to capture the fleeting moments of strangers’ daily activities.

The semi-abstracted, figurative compositions have both a real sense of serenity and intrigue. They quietly invite the viewer to create narratives about the anonymous characters unknowingly immortalised in oil paint.

”My ‘Reflections’ capture a moment…a snapshot of people… who ever they are and whatever they do…a sort of ‘people watching’ … My works could be a sunny day and shadows or the aftermath of a storm with reflections in path.” – Gower

Gower takes inspiration from Modern Masters including Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, Sickert, Francis Bacon. Richard’s fascination with the great painters pushed his own creativity and observations to develop and fine-tune his personal ‘Reflections’ style over the years.

Gower has enjoyed the success of sell-out shows both group and solo exhibitions in London with his works in many private collections here in the UK, Europe and the US. His commissions include a London cityscape for the Lord Mayor of Westminster; a bespoke commission for the Duchess of York; Purdey Guns; Premier League Football clubs and he has an artwork in HRH Private Royal Collection.
